What Is Vaisakhi? Meaning and How SSAs Celebrate
What is Vaisakhi? The meaning of the Sikh festival, the 1699 founding of the Khalsa, nagar kirtan, and how Sikh students celebrate on campus.
On this page
Every April, something special happens in cities with big Sikh communities. Streets fill with saffron and blue. Floats roll by with kirtan playing. Volunteers hand out free food to anyone walking past. Kids, grandparents, and college students all show up.
That is Vaisakhi. If you have seen a nagar kirtan parade and wondered what it was all about, here is the guide.
How Sikhs celebrate Vaisakhi
- Langar and free food for everyone along the route.
- Music and dance, including bhangra and giddha at cultural events.
Vaisakhi on campus
Vaisakhi falls during spring semester, which makes it a big moment for Sikh Student Associations. Ideas SSAs use:
- Group trip to a nagar kirtan in a nearby city
- "What is Vaisakhi?" info table with chai and a short handout for classmates
- Turban-tying booth in saffron and blue
- Cultural night with bhangra or giddha teams
- Seva project like a food drive, connecting the celebration to service
Plan early. Many campus event bookings and funding requests close weeks before the event.
A simple Vaisakhi checklist for SSA boards
If you are on an SSA board, here is a planning timeline students have found useful:
- Eight weeks out: pick the event type, book a room, and submit any student government funding request. Deadlines often come earlier than you expect.
- Four weeks out: design a flyer, post it on Instagram, and share it with partner clubs like the MSA, HSA, or South Asian Student Association.
- Two weeks out: confirm volunteers for setup, food, photos, and cleanup.
- Event day: have a welcome table with a short explainer for first-time guests, and collect emails.
- After: post photos (with permission), thank volunteers, and send a follow-up to everyone who signed in.
If your SSA is new, USM's starter kit includes a first-event playbook and a funding guide, and a USM coordinator reaches out within a week of your application.
