How to write a stronger application

Sikh-specific scholarships are often read by people who care about the community. That changes what "strong" looks like.

1. Be specific about seva. "I volunteer at the gurdwara" is common. What did you actually do, for how long, and what changed because of it?
2. Show leadership, not titles. Being SSA president matters less than what your SSA did while you led it.
3. Ask for recommendations early. Give recommenders at least three weeks and a short summary of what you would like them to mention.
4. Reuse, then tailor. Write one strong core essay about your story, then adapt the opening and closing for each award.
5. Apply to more than one. Individual awards can be small. Several together can change a year.

A simple scholarship tracker

Make a spreadsheet with these columns: award name, link, amount, deadline, eligibility, documents needed, recommenders, status. Check it every Sunday. It sounds boring. It works.
