Sikh Student Associations (SSAs) are now more interconnected than ever, fostering a greater sense of unity. SSAs host a wide array of events that promote student growth both on campus and in the community. Through weekly and quarterly events focused on spiritual and academic development, the United Sikh Movement (USM) seeks to empower students and transition their passions into meaningful action.
USM offers SSAs a four-pillar structure designed to integrate key Sikh values and academic success into their organizations. The four pillars are: Simran, Seva, Sangat & Academics. This framework allows students to develop Sikh-oriented practices, including Naam Japna, Vand Ke Shakna, and Kirt Karna.
To support SSAs in balancing these pillars, USM has:
-
Created a Gurbani Study Course tailored for students
-
Launched a Feed the Homeless Project to inspire Seva
-
Encouraged the practice of Dasvandh to a non-profit of the students' choice
-
Developed an online SSA Resource Bank with event ideas and collaborative tools
Universities across California have embedded this structure into their SSA constitutions, hosting events under all four pillars each semester or quarter. Students have organized and participated in events such as Kirtan nights, beach clean-ups, and resume workshops.
